Obsessed with His Silent Bride
Sigh. Where to even start with this one?
The high: Brooke Moltrum is her usual amazing self playing a villain/archnemesis named Selene. Every coy look and brush of her hands is pure art. You can feel her cunning and spite leaping off the screen every time she is in frame. Brooke as Selene is fire!
All spoilers and no filter ahead!
So, mob boss Declan (Ryan Vincent) has a miserable and abused wife named Eva (Anna Stadler) who from a previous trauma is now mute. Declan brings his girlfriend. Selene, around throwing her into poor Eva’s face. He is awful to Eva often “losing control” aka raping his wife because he can’t deny his feelings for her. Turns out it was all to “protect” her from his mother, Nancy, who was plotting to take control of the mob and was constantly threatening Eva’s life.
In the end, Declan has discovered that Nancy isn’t his mom and he is finally able to turn his back on the mob and take Nancy down. He returns to Eva, dumps ONE apology in her lap, and she forgives him and it’s happily ever after time. Say what? Who writes this stuff? Nancy forced poor mute Eva to get an abortion of her first baby. Declan leaves Eva alone in a restaurant ON HER BIRTHDAY because he ran into Selene. The worst part? Selene and Eva are snatched up by some thugs and Declan is forced to choose one to save and one to “give” to the thugs and he chooses to save Selene while saying in his head he’ll come back and save Eva. Meanwhile, three thugs take Eva to the roof and threaten her with rape and death and she’s like, “Bitch, I’m out” and throws herself off the roof. Honestly, this is where it should have ended. Declan shouldn’t have been redeemed at all. He is garbage.
There were no moments with Declan showing off a sweet and caring side he saves only for Eva. He’s just awful all the time. The story has flashbacks to Eva and Declan as children when Eva was taken in by his grandfather following the murder of her parents. During that time, Delcan was a sweet kid, taking care of Eva and standing up for her, but grown Declan is opposite opposite. He locks her in the closet to punish her like his mother did to her as a child. He denies her a friendship with Remi Taylor about the only person in the whole world who actually gave a shit about Eva. He tells her he’ll divorce her is she pays back the money his family used to raise her as a child, but then won’t let her work. He does that shitty thing men do when they are controlling and doesn’t like her wearing makeup. He sends her out into the “dangerous” world he lives in as a mob boss, but never has any protection with her. It’s the kind of story where you start to hate the character so much, it makes you start to hate the actor.
I mean, none of it is Ryan Vincent’s fault. He is obviously acting his ass off making me hate him so hard. It’s just the story itself that is so aggravating. Eva grew up in that mob house and made it a mob home. I think she could handle an “outside these walls I have to make the world think I hate you, but I don’t for realsies” type of conversation. Like Eva is the perfect mob wife anyway. She literally can’t speak at all and only uses sign language. She can keep secrets forever! I’m pretty sure most mob bosses don’t have a sign language interpreter on staff just waiting for the chance to interrogate a mute mob wife…but what a cool job…how much do you think something like that would pay?
Also, I like some spice and there was none. No hot Declan showering those dirty abs for days…no beautiful Eva showering while Declan is making moon eyes at her from across the room. The whole series just felt like an abusive relationship, but it’s ok babe, because I had “reasons.” Girl, bye.
